Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the highest-streamed tune within six months. The single a mix of reggaeton and pop was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton music but it also attracted attention towards Latin music in general. In 2015 there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. When Despacito was at its height, the band's success in 2017, 19 songs mainly in Spanish hit into the Top 100. This figure grew to 41 in 2020. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix of Despacito (2017) the most well-known musicians quickly began to collaborate with reggaeton musicians, such as Drake together with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna with Maluma with Maluma on Medellin (2019). At the time of 2020, some reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at the genre's direction toward the mainstream, but a new generation such as Rauw Alejandro, sought to continue the evolution of reggaeton. His music often contained elements from electronic dance and other genres.
